Library Conduct Policy

All Library users are entitled to a quiet research and study environment free of harassment. Patrons should be respectful of others' needs for quiet to study or conduct research. Staff may request that disruptive or noisy patrons leave the area or the Library.

Quiet Study Areas Policy | Cell Phone Policy | Food & Drink Policy

Quiet Study Areas

  • Patrons in the John Peace Library should limit conversation in general study areas including: the reference and government information stacks, current periodicals and microforms area, and the Multimedia Center on the second level and the third level stacks. Patrons at the Downtown library should limit conversation in all general study areas.
  • Limit conversation when exiting study rooms, the lab or classrooms in the Library.
  • Observe the designated "Quiet Areas" on the third level at JPL and at the Downtown Library.
  • Small groups should use the small study rooms located in the Library. The rooms are not soundproof and patrons are requested to use appropriate levels of conversation.
  • The area surrounding service desks, the public computer workstations, and areas where copying and scanning equipment is in use are typically the areas where patron interaction with staff results in a higher level of noise. Patrons should select study areas accordingly.

Cell Phones And Other Electronic Devices

  • Set cell phones and pagers to vibrate or turn off before entering the Library.
  • Cell phones may not be used in the Library for incoming or outgoing calls except in the areas specified below.
  • Cell phone use is limited to the area in the Library that is outside the security gates near the public telephones on the second level at JPL, and to the area near the circulation desk at the Downtown Library. Patrons using cell phones in other areas will be asked to leave for the duration of their call.
  • Library and maintenance personnel may use cell phones in all areas as needed.
  • Use radios or personal stereos with headphones only, and not in the designated quiet areas.
