How does it work? -- accessing the Internet

What all do you need in order to access the Internet? Let's make a quick list:

  • computer
  • modem -- most computers now come with "internal modems." Modems were traditionally used via telephone hookup. Internet Service Providers(ISPs) also offer cable modem services and digital subscriber line (DSL) connections.
  • browser -- Used to locate and view pages on the web. Brower software can be downloaded for free.
MS Internet Explorer, Firefox and Netscape are commonly used browsers.
  • ISP (Internet Service Provider) -- An ISP provides access to the Internet. Most are fee based, but some companies provide free access. You can see a list of ISPs here.

At the UTSA campuses, computer workstations for Internet access are located in the library and in the various computer labs.
