How does it work? --tips & tricks

These tips and tricks can make navigating the Internet a bit easier. The tips use words associated with Windows computers, but Macs also have similar if not the same features.

These features will save you time, money, and impress your family and friends.

Copy & Paste
Try this example:

  1. hold down your left mouse button and highlight this address: http://www.lib.utsa.edu
  2. click the right mouse button and select "Copy" from the menu
  3. place your cursor in the web address box above and delete the current address
  4. click the right mouse button and select "Paste" from the menu
  5. hit enter to go to the new address

You can also use the Edit menu at the top of your screen to select Copy & Paste.

Right mouse click
There are several things you can do with the right mouse button. One is opening a page into a new window on the Web.
Try it:

  1. right mouse click on this address: http://www.lib.utsa.edu
  2. select "Open in New Window" from the menu

Other right mouse features: reload a page, add the page into your bookmarks, email a page, close multiple windows, and more. Feel free to explore.

Alt + Tab
Useful key combination when you have multiple windows open and want to quickly shift between them. If you currently have more than one window open, hold down your Alt key and then hit Tab to experiment.

Ctrl + F
Useful key combination when you have an extremely long web document and you would like to find a specific occurrence of a word or phrase. Try this example:

  1. press Ctrl and F at the same time
  2. look for this word: edit
  3. where on this page can that word be found?
