Computing FacilitiesReference Area ComputersThe Library provides about one hundred workstations for students, faculty and staff. A limited number of stations are available to the general public. These workstations provide full access to the Library Catalogs (including UCAT), electronic resources such as electronic journals, online databases and electronic books, as well as the internet. These workstations are located near the Reference area of the JPL (see map) and the Downtown Library. Please check the Reference Area Computers page for logon and access information. Library Electronic Classroom (LEC)The Library Electronic Classroom, located on the 3rd floor of the JPL Building (see map), is available as a classroom and lab for UTSA faculty and students. When not reserved for a class (check LEC class schedule), students may use it as a lab. The LEC provides twenty eight workstations and one digital scanner. These workstations are equipped with 250 MB Zip drives and have the following software; Microsoft Office 2000 Suite (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, MS FrontPage), Internet access, Internet Explorer browser, Telnet, Microsoft Photo Editor, and Adobe Photoshop (on workstation with scanner). Downtown Electronic Classroom (DEC)The Downtown Electronic Classroom (DEC) is available only to UTSA librarians for bibliographic instruction activities. Faculty and staff wishing to schedule a session with a librarian should contact Pru Morris for classroom availability. Note: This electronic classroom is not available for students, general public or independent faculty/staff use. Wireless Access at the LibraryWireless access is available at the JPL and Downtown Library. All UTSA students, faculty and staff are permitted to use the campus wireless network. Guest access may be obtained for campus visitors by contacting the college or department that is sponsoring your visit. To ensure connectivity you should purchase a card that is 802.11b or 802.11g (Wi-Fi) compliant. Traffic on the wireless network is not encrypted and can therefore be “sniffed” during transmission. Faculty and staff members needing access to sensitive resources via the UTSA administrative network will need to install and use the VPN client. It is also recommended that McAfee antivirus software be installed on all computers accessing the network. For more information on wireless access at UTSA, downloading VPN, and the McAfee antivirus software, please visit the Air Rowdy website. Report problems concerning the wireless network by contacting the UTSA Helpdesk at 458-5538. PrintingThe UTSA Library (1604 and Downtown campuses) has implemented PrintSmart UTSA, a new print management program that will reduce waste, save money, and improve service. Most public workstations are networked to laser printers. Check the printers and PrintSmart UTSA page for more information, including locations. Wireless Printing in the LibraryWireless printing is now available at the 1604 Library. The wireless release station and wireless printer are located on the second floor of the JPL building across from the Reference Desk. To install the wireless print package (Windows version only) on your personal laptop and to use wireless PrintSmart in the library, follow the PrintSmart Wireless Printing instructions carefully. Note for Users Who Check Out Laptops From the 1604 Library: There is no need to install the wireless printer package on laptops that have been checked out from the Circulation Desk. The updated package has been already installed on these laptops. The default printer for wireless printing in the library is called LIBRARY WIRELESS. You will need to select other printers in order to send your print job to other locations. Click on PrintSmart Wireless Printing to learn more about wireless PrintSmart. ScannersThere is one digital scanner in the Library Electronic Classroom. There are also two digital microform scanners located in the Microforms reading room, located on the 2nd floor of the JPL Building. Check the microform scanners page for more information, including locations and charges. |
