Library Electronic Classroom - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What is the Library Electronic Classroom? What is it used for? Who can use it?
A: The Library Electronic Classroom is a computer facility (Windows 2000 workstations) with two projectors installed for instructional classes. UTSA faculty, staff, currently enrolled students and UTSA-invited guests can use the lab. The LEC was designed to provide a facility to support the access to educational resources.
UTSA faculty can reserve the room for classes and lectures that require hands-on experience with computers and its resources. Students can use the facility to work on their class related projects using software that is available on workstations, to browse the Internet and to check the library online catalog.
A student should only occupy one workstation when working on a project. Any work that is not related to student research or class assignments is strongly discouraged. Although there is no time restriction for using a workstation, Lab Assistants on duty may approach students who chat, and ask them to release the equipment for any waiting students.
Q:Where is the Library Electronic Classroom located ?
A: The Library Electronic Classroom is located on the third floor of the John Peace Library, in room 3.02.32..
Q:What kind of equipment and software does the Library Electronic Classroom have?
A: The Library Electronic Classroom contains 28 workstations. The computers are Pentium 650 MHz with 256 MB of RAM and 10GB of disk space. All computers contain MS Office 2000 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, FrontPage), and Internet Explorer version 6.0 browser, and Telnet. The majority of computers in the lab have full multimedia capacity with Real Audio and Shockwave capabilities. There is one scanner in the lab.
The Lab Assistant on duty will be glad to help you with the software that is loaded on these workstations. Please feel free to ask!
Q:What days and hours is the Library Electronic Classroom open?
A: Classes are sometimes scheduled in the LEC and at that time the lab may not be available for other students. Please check the LEC weekly class schedule as well as the library hours page before coming to the lab.
Q:How can I find help if I need it?
A: There is always a Lab Assistant on duty. She/he will assist you with your printing problems, saving and retrieving files, scanning pictures, finding urls and will inform you if there are any network problems. Lab Assistants are happy to assist you, however, they will not do the job for you, e.g. proofread your paper or give you step-by-step instruction on using MS Word. Students are encouraged to take training classes for basic computer applications, like MS Office and searching the Internet.
Reference help is available at the Reference Desk downstairs.
Q:Can I print in the Library Electronic Classroom? Is there a charge for printing? How many printouts can I make? Why can't I print from Telnet?
A: There are two Hewlett Packard LaserJet printers. We do not have a color printer. Color printers are available at MS and BB Labs located in the Multidisciplinary and Business Buildings.
The UTSA Library (1604 and Downtown campuses) has implemented PrintSmart UTSA, a new print management program that will reduce waste, save money, and improve service. For more information, please visit PrintSmart UTSA
Telnet software only allows you to print using print screens. If you need to print the whole document from Telnet, visit the public area at the Electronic Resource Center located in the lobby of the 2nd floor in the library.
Q:What program can I use to write my document or paper?
A: All workstations in the lab have a copy of Word 2000 installed.
We do not have Corel WordPerfect. Please remember that Corel WordPerfect documents will not be converted correctly in MS Word. If you need to use WordPerfect, please visit the MS or Business Lab located in the Multidisciplinary and Business Buildings.
Q: What program can I use to write a spreadsheet or make a graph?
A: All computers have a copy of Excel 2000. If you need any assistance with using this program, please ask the lab monitor on duty.
Q: How do I send or read Email? I can't remember my Password or Login name, HELP! I don't have a Lonestar account, how do I email?
A: If you have a Lonestar account, click on TELNET button. Once in Telnet, pick "lonestar.utsa.edu" and click "OK." This will take you to the login screen. After you are logged in, you can use Lonestar e-mail program.
If you have problems with your new Lonestar account or forget your password/login name, go to the MS LAB on the first floor of the MS Building and ask them to help check your account.
If you need an email account, you can sign up for a Lonestar account online http://lonestar.utsa.edu, or you can visit the MS or Business Building Labs.
Q: I want to scan a photo or document, how do I use the scanner?
A: The scanner station is located in the back of the lab near the printer. To scan a picture, image, or document use the program called HP DeskScan. Adobe Photoshop and Corell Draw programs will help you to modify the scanned images. If you need assistance, please feel free to ask the Lab Assistant on duty.
Q: How do I open an application or file if Windows Explorer is not available?
A: All workstations in the Library Electronic Classroom have been secured using NT policies in order to avoid unintentional deletion of important files. The customized desktop will provide access to applications available on computers in the lab. The students can then, within the application open their files stored on the floppy diskette. To save the file on the floppy, students should indicate the path in front of the filename e.g. a:\homework.doc.
