Library Electronic Classroom (LEC) - Guidelines & Policies
General Policies
Food and Drink
No food is allowed at any time. Drinks in authorized containers must be placed on the small table
in the middle of the room.
Printing
The UTSA Library (1604 and Downtown campuses) has implemented PrintSmart UTSA, a new print management program that will reduce waste, save money, and improve service. For more information, please visit PrintSmart UTSA in the Library.
Children in the Lab
The LEC follows current UTSA policy, as stated in the Handbook of Operating
Procedures, Chapter 9, Section 9.13, part D: " Children twelve (12) years
of age and younger, not participating in UTSA sponsored programs, are prohibited
from laboratories and other areas where significant potential safety hazards
and liabilities exist and where strict safety precautions are required."
Policies for Open Lab Use
The Library Electronic Classroom, if not scheduled for a class, can be used as
an OPEN lab for all UTSA faculty, staff, currently enrolled students and UTSA-invited guests. The following guidelines should ensure that the lab is used properly:
- All patrons should use the lab only during the hours posted on the door.
- The users should leave the lab 15 minutes before scheduled classes or closing time.
- The Lab Assistant on duty will inform patrons of the closing time 15-30 minutes prior to scheduled closing.
- The use of computers is on a first come, first served basis. Computer terminals cannot be reserved at any time. There is no time limit for computer use if the use does not interfere with time reserved for classes.
- PCs left unattended for 20 minutes will be logged off automatically. Any loss of data is the responsibility of the users.
- The Library reserves the right to halt activities that may not be related to academic work (e.g. personal e-mails, chatrooms, games) and reassign the machines to patrons who need them for academic purposes.
- Only software available on lab computers can be used within the facility.
- Loading any third party programs by users on the lab workstations'
local hard drive is strictly prohibited.
- Users can send suggestions for new software purchases for the
lab.
- Lab Assistants on duty monitor the lab to make sure that patrons can access
appropriate software/hardware, print, or save files. They can help with
ftping large files if users have a Unix account. Lab Assistants' are not responsible
for training patrons how to use specific programs.
- Users are responsible for bringing their own floppy diskettes, zip disks (250 MB or 100 MB) or flash drives.
- Any personal belongings left in the lab will be taken to lost and found area at the 1604 Circulation desk.
Policies for Classroom Use
Set up for Classes
If specific software is required to be loaded on
computers for a class, please notify the Instruction Coordinator or the Electronic
Services Librarian allowing sufficient time to load the software. Loading
special software may take several days to arrange.
Scheduling for use as Classroom
Library-related Instruction
- The facility is designed so that it can be used as two classrooms, or the
entire facility can be opened up into one large classroom or student PC lab.
The two parts of the room are called LEC-A and LEC-B. Unless otherwise noted,
all classes are held in LEC-B.
- The Instruction Coordinator (or designee in the event of the absence of
the Coordinator) will schedule the facility. The Instruction Coordinator
may schedule one side of the facility (LEC-A or LEC-B) for library instruction
classes and library-related staff training during daytime or evening hours.
- The Coordinator or designee will enter all reservations electronically
so that interested parties will have access to the schedule. The Coordinator
will give "read" permissions to the electronic schedule upon request. Class times are posted on the web site.
- All reservations must be entered in the electronic schedule by Friday
of the week prior to the reservation.
- Scheduling both sides of the LEC should be kept at a minimum and will be
at the discretion of the Instruction Coordinator in consultation with the
Electronic Services Librarian.
- The Coordinator will resolve any scheduling conflicts. Library staff should
avoid last minute schedule changes affecting the times when students would
normally expect the Lab to be available to them.
- The Lab will close 15 minutes before a scheduled class time to allow
adequate time for set-up.
- During the last two weeks of each semester, the LEC is available as a full-time computer lab for students. The Instruction Coordinator must have the approval
of the LEC Supervisor for any exceptions to this rule.
Faculty use
- Faculty may reserve LEC-B for occasional use to
give hands-on instruction to small groups of students on specific software
or assignments.
- No class will be scheduled for an entire semester in the LEC.
- All reservations must be entered into the electronic schedule by Friday
of the week before the reservation.
- A faculty member reserving the room must receive instruction in the use
of the classroom control equipment (the LINK System), and the Sony Projector
and electric screen as needed.
- The Instruction Coordinator will schedule the facility and will resolve
any scheduling conflicts.
- During the last two weeks of class sessions each semester, the LEC is available as a full-time computer lab for students. The Instruction Coordinator must have the approval
of the LEC Supervisor for any exceptions to this rule.
