This collection supports the curriculum of the College of Education & Human Development, particularly the methods and practicum courses and the children's and young adult literature courses. Education methods and approaches used in Texas and the United States are emphasized in the collection. The teaching materials are in a variety of media, including electronic formats, and of current significance. The collection of teacher resource books and ancillary curriculum materials has been enhanced by the acquisition of a significant number of teaching aids in a variety of formats. The primary language of material in the collection is English, although materials for use in bicultural-bilingual classes and foreign language instruction are also included. All materials are available for inspection, evaluation and use by students, faculty and staff. Circulation policies may vary based on format and patron classification. Curriculum MaterialsThe emphasis of the Curriculum Materials collection is to provide students with innovative resources for use in lesson preparation and curriculum development. Curriculum guides, teacher resource activity/idea books, and hands-on teaching aids are all available in this collection. In addition, the collection contains media encompassing the latest instructional technologies. Examples include: videocassettes, multimedia kits, charts and study prints, videodiscs, models, transparencies, filmstrips, CD's, CDI's (Interactive), games, slides, computer software, and various manipulatives (hands-on). Electronic instructional media systems currently adopted for use in Texas schools and supplementary materials which correlate to adopted textbooks are an integral part of this collection. Supplementary materials when used together with the textbook provide the student with an opportunity to examine and evaluate the learning systems used in today's classrooms. The curriculum materials are housed in the Multimedia Center. The loan period is 14 days with a limit of 5 items for students and 28 days for faculty and professional staff. TextbooksEmphasis in the textbook collection is identified as "conforming" by the Texas State Board of Education. Textbooks for grades K-12 in the major subject areas (such as Reading, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Music, Art, and Foreign Languages) are included. The textbook series are housed in the Multimedia Center. The loan period is 14 days with a limit of 5 items for students and 28 days for faculty and professional staff. Juvenile LiteratureThe juvenile literature collection is comprised of children's and young adult fiction and nonfiction literature. The collection also includes complete collections of the Newberry Medal, Caldecott Medal, and Americas Award books as well as a significant number of honor and notable books. The focus of this collection is on theme books that correlate to the basal reader and supplementary ready textbook series, award books, multicultural books, and works by popular children's authors. Examples of types of books are reference, history, picture books, historical fiction, fantasy, mythology, poetry, children's classics, biographies, and folk tales. A regional curricular focus -- Texas Studies, is also significant in this collection. Juvenile literature books are located on the third floor of the Library in the east central stack area. Juvenile literature titles in big book format are housed in the Multimedia Center. A significant juvenile literature collection, with greater emphasis on readers is also available at the Downtown Library. For additional information, contact the Multimedia Center at 458-5503. |
